Did not go back hall last night as planned. Imagine my surprise when i checked on my hamsters when i returned this afternoon... One of the babies had escaped! I made sure the latches were shut tight before i left, but i missed out the roof opening on their cage (but it did not escape through this, read on for explanation), which i did not shut tightly. I searched my room for it but couldn't find it. It must have slipped under the gap of my door to freedom, in other words inevitable death.
I got real upset, cos it's the first time my hamsters gave birth and these 6 baby buggers are really really cute. So i cleaned up tonnes of trash while looking for it, all the time hoping that the missing hamster would be somewhere in my room still. so when i couldn't find it i was devastated. it would either be eaten by cats, killed by the cleaners, stuck in somewhere it could not get out of, or simply just starve to death. Now i know why dog-owners get so upset when they lose their pets. At least dogs could survive on their own, how would hamsters survive? i mean no one sees wild hamsters around do they? unlike wild dogs and cats. hamsters face imminent death should they escape. GF was consoling me via SMS saying hopefully it'll be hungry and find it's way back. which is near impossible.
moping around my room, i heard PG calling my name. I did not respond that quickly and he called out to me a second time, this time more urgently. so i went over to his room which is just 2 rooms away.
"Did you put a hamster in my box?" he pointed to his box where he kept his 2 male hamsters. Of cos not, i said, i just came back this afternoon.
"There's an extra hamster there!", he pointed again inside his box, this time i saw what he was excited about.... IT WAS MY BABY HAMSTER!!!
somehow, it slipped under my door, ran past KJ's room unscathed (there are cats around and hostelites walking about), up PG's shoes, underneath the gap of PG's door, up his array of stuff on the floor, and land safely into the box on the floor where he found it with the other 2 hamsters of his. IS THIS CRAZY SHIT OR WAT???? it managed to find OTHER hamsters that are around, and they are in PG's room. And it did not just sit quietly in his room, it climbed onto his stuff and dropped into the box! WHAT ARE THE ODDS OF TAT??????
So i collected her and put her back where she belongs, with her siblings, thankful for one of the few miracles that life brings.
Later i found out that she climbed up the metal wires of her cage, and squeeze through the gap where i hung the water bottle as the original water bottle for the cage was leaky. i strung a piece of wire across the hole and hung the bottle there. She escaped again while i was doing some programming for J, and J saw her running under my wooden rack. that's prob how she escaped. smart little critter.
